Ariad Presents New Data and ISIS Teams Up with Roche

Ariad Pharmaceuticals has presented some very interesting new data at this year's meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). As it turns out, recently approved leukemia drug ponatinib may eventually see use in other cancer types. According to Ariad, ponatinib is a potent inhibitor of “key activating and drug-resistant KIT mutants in GIST.” KIT is a gene that codes for a cellular signaling receptor often found in mutated form in cancer cells, including gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). Current therapies use existing inhibitory drugs.

Biotech Updates: Exelixis and Geron

Exelixis announced positive data for its lead drug, cabozantinib. Cabozantinib, a small molecule cancer compound, shows promising activity in a wide variety of cancers. Cabozantinib's leading indication, thyroid cancer, is currently in Phase 3 trials. It is also in Phase 2 trials for a dozen additional types of cancer, as well as Phase 1 trials for two more.

I'm writing you while on the road for a meeting at Agora Financial headquarters. I'm in Baltimore, a chilly change of scenery compared with Florida. I'm a Sunshine State native, and it was bright and sunny with daytime temps in the 80s when I flew out. I've had to dust off seldom-used winter clothing for the event -- but it's worth it.
