Houston resident Clayton Harris just became the first commercial user of a revolutionary new communications network.
It’s fifth-generation wireless, or 5G. It will be such an improvement over current 4G wireless that it has some experts saying it will be the last major wireless upgrade we will ever need.
5G is going to bring high-speed internet everywhere — without wires. It will be at least 100 times faster than the 4G connection you’re probably using right now.
This communications network will disrupt existing industries like cable and broadband internet. It will make other tech trends, like the internet of things and autonomous vehicles, possible. Real-world artificial intelligence will get a boost with the availability
It will create trillions in new wealth and millions of new jobs and will serve as the fundamental building block for new technologies we haven’t even dreamed up yet.
5G is incorporating new communications technologies, like MIMO, in which a device uses multiple radio circuits on multiple frequencies or to multiply the amount of data it can send and receive. It is also using new spectrum frequencies, like millimeter wave, to increase the amount of data a signal can transport.
As a “network of networks,” 5G will also include wireless signals from space, once constellations of low-Earth-orbiting satellites are launched.
We haven’t seen something this big happen since the internet took off, or when wireless communications made smartphones possible.
It all started this week when Verizon flipped the switch on the first segments of its 5G network, with Clayton Harris as its first customer.
If you live in Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles or Sacramento, you’re possibly among the first to have access, if you want it.
But even if you don’t, you can benefit from investing in tech companies enabling and profiting from the 5G boom.
I’ve spent months getting us set up to do just that.
One of the best ways to play the 5G wave in the U.S. with communications infrastructure operators. These companies will see a major surge in demand for the thousands upon thousands of cellphone sites they own and operate throughout the country.
Another way to play 5G is with telecommunications companies like AT&T (NYSE: T), Sprint (NYSE: S) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ). Many here and abroad are set to profit big time and the returns on some of these investments could be really large.
Wireless circuit specialists will also profit greatly from 5G, either through the sale of wireless communications chips or through licensing of 5G intellectual property.
And don’t let the recent tech sell-off startle you.
5G is only barely starting in the U.S., and following close behind are other countries like China, the EU, Korea and Japan.
This is a global long-term tech trend that isn’t going to go away.

Editor’s note: 5G is why “$7 Internet” could come to your state this year…
A brand-new internet technology with the code name “Halo-Fi” promises to be faster than cable yet, by my estimates, over 7 times cheaper, which could save you an easy $19,494.
